Thai Food

We had to pick up something nearby and wanted to eat out since it was already 8pm.  Google came to the rescue as usual and found a few Thai restaurants in the area.  Mr. Thai was only a few minutes away and had good online recommendations.
We have always been looking out for good Thai (and Chinese, Indian, Korean, Vietnamese, German, etc, etc, etc ;-) ) food places.  Most ethnic foods in the States are "americanized".  This usually means not spicy enough (both fragrant spices and hot spice), too salty/sweet/bland, and definitely too-large portions, though I don't usually mind the last one.  A hole-in-the-wall place we tried before, Thai Cafe, had pretty good and authentic food.  More options is always a good thing.
With Mr. Thai, the fragrant spices were very well controlled, distinct and not overwhelming, nor overwhelmed by the heat. They offer various grades of heat from none, mild, right up to very hot, and I do mean very hot. Good for us since we love spicy-hot food. I ordered the Pad See Ew with beef (very hot) and Jia Nin had the curry seafood fried rice (hot). Both were excellent. It was obvious that things were cooked in a very hot (temperature) wok, the way it was meant to be.  Definitely going back to try the rest of the menu.

About Radiation

If you're worried about radiation due to the whole Japan nuclear reactor saga, here's some information that may help calm your anxieties.

xkcd created a comparison chart of different levels of exposure with everyday common activities, versus actual dangerous situations.

And remember, not all radiation is the same.

Indian Fast Food in Town

A new (and only) fast food restaurant serving pretty good Indian food opened recently in town.  It's called Neehee's and proclaims to serve Indian street food.  It is located in a strip mall that is fast becoming a Little India of sorts.  There is already a Bombay Grocers as well as an Indian takeout joint nearby that we haven't tried yet.  It reminds me of Komola's Restaurant back in Singapore, also a fast food place.  Komola's also has a more upscale version (Komola Villa) that serves really, really good traditional Indian vegetarian meals, my first experience with such cuisine.

So far, we've tried Neehee's Pani Puri (puffed puries (puffed pastry?) filled with potato mixture and spicy tangy water), Idly Chaat (fried idly (potato chunks?) with chutneys, yogurt), Dabeli Dosa wrap (dabeli stuffing mixed with ground nuts and onions cut into pieces), Masala Dosa (a plain dosa with masala chutney on the side), Methi Gota (fresh leaves mixed with besan and spices and deep fried) and of course, Mango Lassi.  No prata though, sigh.

Looking forward to going down their extensive menu.  :-)

Tastes Like Crab Roe

I had a can of Reese Mussels in Red Pepper Sauce this morning.  They taste so good and the leftover juice and oil looked so attractive that it seemed like such a waste to just dump it.  So I beat in three eggs and cooked the mixture in the microwave for two minutes.  The end product smells and tastes very much like crab roe!  Specifically, when there's roe in the chilli crab dish.  Even the texture of the cooked egg feels like soft-cooked crab roe.  Yum!
