Flushing, New York

Greetings from New York! Actually, the city Jamaica in the state of New York. I'm staying in a hotel near the airport. It's cheaper than staying in Manhattan, which is expensive like crazy. Also, a stadium in Flushing is hosting the US Open, so hotels there are either totally full or charging super-high rates. sigh. The title is deliberate, there is actually a city called Flushing in New York state. Change the comma and the meaning changes totally :-). My favorite part of New York is undoubtably the Chinatown in Flushing. Food, food and more food! Bubble tea, satay, roti canai (prata), nasi lemak, laksa, beef rendang, Hokkien mee (black, Malaysian style), popiah, kang kong (see, got vege!), belacan, egg tarts, char siew pastry.... I'd say that 80% of the food that one can find in Singapore, can be find in there. Of course, some of it doesn't really taste the same since it must fit American taste-buds. But who cares! There's still lots more to eat! Jia Nin and I will fly back on Tuesday. I'll see about blogging more from here.

  1. Wa so many familiar food names!

I don't have a liking for food in any Chinatowns except for those in Singapore ;P Especially those flour-laden buffets or weird tasting fishes and white rice in London's Chinatown. But that's from the JC choir tour and backpacking uni days... With more $ in the pocket, I guess Chinatown food should not be that bad ya...

Weiye has been surfing the web for makansutra etc especially laksa... although there's Prima pre-packs or good cooks, nothing beats the "authentic" food stalls in Singapore!

Maybe we have to make a trip back to Singapore soon!

Do we literally pronounce it as "flushing"?

Anyway, once a Singaporean, always a Singaporean. So you can't not love food wherever you are... hahaha.

The Prima pre-packed sauces are quite popular but expensive. I think a pkt of 200 ml lemak sauce cost over S$10. And you can't keep them for too long (shelf life about 2 months only, i think). My fren wanted to buy lots to bring to his aunt in the UK. In the end, he bot only 2 pkts. Are you able to find them in HK or USA?

  3. We can find Prima in HK. Not the entire range though. But I use Asian Gourmet (cheaper and serving just right for 2-3 persons instad of the 3-4 recommended per packet)... it contains just the sauce (e.g. Laksa, Green Curry) without the coconut powder/sauce. I have to buy separately. I usually buy Carnation milk though (recommended by mommy). If I think we have to watch our intake, will buy the low fat type or put less of the coconut :)

I have yet to use the bigger curry spice pack from dad's shop :) Think it should taste better since it's from dad's shop haha...
